KENYA // MOSQUES, MATATUS & A MIGHTY GOD
On the east coast of Kenya is an island. Fifteen years ago the island was 100% Muslim. There were no motor vehicles, but lots of donkeys. The streets are so narrow that you sometimes have to move into a doorway to let other pass. There were very few churches.
Today, the island has a population of 20 thousand, and is 85% Muslim. There are still no motor vehicles, and donkeys are everywhere. There are 35 mosques... and 10 active churches!
So what was the cause of this positive change? Let me introduce to you Pastor Thukus.
Ps Thukus showed up on this Kenyan island about 10 years ago. The people: devout Muslims; the churches: minimal, the witchcraft: very active; the general vibe: extremely hostile toward anyone or anything Christian.
But none of this was going to get in the way of Ps Thukus doing the work of the Lord.
From the very beginning Ps Thukus knew he had to devote himself to praying for this island. He awoke every morning at 3 am and walked around the island praying for the people and for the situation to change. After weeks of doing this, they came across a man just behind their building, who was also getting up early to ‘pray’, or more correctly, curse the island using witchcraft. So the next morning Ps Thukus woke up earlier to pray… only to find out the other man had done the same thing. For weeks they went head to head in spiritual warfare, as the battle came down to who awoke earlier.
In the process of all this, Ps Thukus’ wife had become very sick, and was not able to get out of bed for weeks, until one day her husband had a vision of 2 cats – one black, very mangy looking, and the other golden in colour and beautiful. As the vision played out it appeared that the commotion between the 2 cats represented the battle between these 2 men, and essentially, the battle between good and evil.
In the vision, the golden cat had triumphed over the black cat. And then shortly afterwards, Ps Thukus realised his wife was sitting up for the first time in weeks - another sign of victory. Ps Thukus and his wife continued praying for the island. After 4 years of faithfulness of God and dedication in prayer, the hostile atmosphere began to dissolve.
So why am I telling you this story? Because so often in life we give up on praying for something if we don’t see anything happen after a day, or maybe you made it to a week. Have you ever prayed for anything for more than a year? Ps Thukus and his wife came to this island hoping to tell these people about Jesus. But it took 4 long years of prayer before they even had a chance to share about their faith with these Muslims.
But they never gave up. And God faithfully answered their prayers.
My second lesson in prayer: don’t give up on praying for something too soon.
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” - Luke 18:1
If you were to pray for one thing for the rest of the year, what would it be? Maybe it’s healing for a sick family member. Or perhaps you would like to see your best friend become a Christian. If it’s something you really desire, then keep praying for it! Pray Until Something Happens.
