We are a movement responding to the cry of the persecuted church.
A voice that tells their story, a group of walking billboards that unashamedly stand up for those who suffer...

TROUBLE IN ERITREA (POSTED FEB 2011)

My Heart Bleeds has learnt of the death of another Christian in an Eritrean detention centre.  A 35 year old woman was shot dead on Friday, November 19, as she tried to escape from the Military Training Centre where she had been held in a metal shipping container for the past two years.

The Full Story |

Ferewini Gebru Tekleberhne, around 35, was shot dead on Friday, November 19, while trying to escape from Sawa Military Training Centre where she had been held in a metal shipping container for the past two years.

Shipping Containers |
In Eritrea Christians are often held in metal shipping containers where temperatures during the day can soar to well over 50 degrees Celsius causing the skin of those forced up against the edge of the container to burn. At night the temperatures are so cold that hypothermia is almost certain. There is little to no ventilation in these containers and no toilet facilities.

Ferewini was single and came to faith in Christ in 2007 while doing her national service around the town of Barentu, Zoba Gash Barka administrative zone. She was arrested for her religious activities outside of the government recognized Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran and Islamic faiths while serving there.

Sources indicated that she was buried soon after her death outside Aderset detention centre near the military training centre. It is not clear how many people she leaves behind.

This is the fourteenth reported Christian death in an Eritrean prison, of which six were women. Ferewini is the second reported Christian to die at the military training centre in Sawa. The training camp includes a military punishment centre reserved mostly for those trying to avoid military service and those practicing religion outside of government approved groups.

Prayer points

  1. The circumstances surrounding Ferewini’s death serves to remind us of the horrendous maltreatment religious prisoners are facing in Eritrea. Please pray for the Lord’s sustaining grace upon all those held because of their faith in Christ. Pray that the Lord would guard them against discouragement, keeping them strong in the faith.
  2. Pray that the Lord would bring to salvation through the testimony of His suffering children in Eritrea. Pray that government officials would come to see that by persecuting His children, they are persecuting the Lord.
  3. Pray that the Lord would in His time and in a way He chooses bring freedom to the Church in Eritrea. Pray that His purposes would be fulfilled while this persecution continues and that He would be glorified.
